Of Pilgrims & Guinea Pigs

November 19, 2007

Thanksgiving celebration today with about 80 homeschoolers.  Great food, but I’m not eating sugar.  It changes the experience.  It’s so clear that sugar is poison when you consider how it makes food with literally no nutritional value taste so much better than food that actually keeps you alive.  Pumpkin pie or green beans?  Pumpkin pie!  Cake or collard greens?  Cake!  Cake!  Cake!

I was happy to be in the company of a cigarette addict in similar circumstance.  We had to decide whether to stick with the kids or flag down a trucker and head for Margaritaville.  It was not a quick decision.

Everyone sitting at my table had either adopted or is thinking about it, children from all over: Haiti, Brazil, Latvia & America.  As I held my favorite new friend’s Haitian 4-year old on my lap, I spoke with a very entertaining 9-year old Brazilian boy.  He actually winked at me.  I could almost start liking holidays again.

So, since I am 47 and currently plan to have no more children, we drove directly to a pet store and bought a guinea pig named Lucille Ball and a rabbit named Cinnamon Bun.

I did not plan to do this, it just happened.
